How to share a private photo gallery that won't show up on Google search

Worried your shared photos might turn up in a Google search? Here is how sharing works, when photos can become searchable, and how to share a gallery that stays off search for good.

It is a fair worry: if you put your photos online to share them, could a stranger stumble onto them through a Google search? The short answer is that a private share should never be searchable, but it helps to understand when photos can become findable, so you can be sure yours will not.

How things end up in search

Google finds pages mainly by following links from other pages it already knows about. If a page is linked from somewhere public, or sits on a public profile, a crawler can reach it and may list it. Pages that are not linked anywhere public, or that tell crawlers to stay out, do not get listed.

  • A photo posted to a public social profile can be indexed.
  • An image on a public website can show up in image search.
  • A private link that is not published anywhere and tells crawlers not to index it will not appear.

A private link is not a public page

A shared gallery link is meant to be sent person to person, not published. As long as it is not posted on a public page and is set to stay out of search, crawlers have no path to it.

How a private gallery stays off search

Galrivo galleries are built to be shared by you, not discovered. They are deliberately kept out of search results, and the links are random and impossible to guess, so there is no door for a crawler or a stranger to wander through.

1

Every link is random

Your gallery link is a long, unguessable web address. Nobody stumbles onto it by typing a likely URL.

2

It stays off search engines

Galleries tell Google and others not to list them, so they never turn up in search results.

3

Add a password

Even if the link gets forwarded, a password means a stranger still sees nothing.

PasswordPeople enter this once before they can open the gallery.

Your privacy checklist

  • Do not post the gallery link on a public page or profile.
  • Add a password for anything sensitive.
  • Set an end date so old links cannot linger.
  • Send the link and password through different channels.

Do those and your gallery stays genuinely private. For the deeper how-and-why of the privacy model, read what drive.file access means.

Key takeaways

  • Search finds pages through public links; an unpublished private link has no path in.
  • Galrivo gallery links are random and unguessable.
  • Galleries are kept out of search results by design.
  • Add a password and an end date, and never post the link publicly.
